Origin of Fire:

Simone’s Notes:

Envy may be defined as an emotion that "occurs when a person lacks another's perceived superior quality, achievement, or possession and either desires it or wishes that the other lacked it." Envy can also derive from a sense of low self-esteem that result from an upward social comparison threatening a person's self image: another person has something that the envier considers to be important to have. If the other person is perceived to be similar to the envier, the aroused envy will be particularly intense, because it signals to the envier that it just as well could have been he or she who had the desired object. Bertrand Russell said envy was one of the most potent causes of unhappiness. It is a universal and most unfortunate aspect of human nature because not only is the envious person rendered unhappy by his envy, but also wishes to inflict misfortune on others. Although envy is generally seen as something negative, Russell also believed that envy was a driving force behind the movement towards democracy and must be endured in order to achieve a more just social system.

Billy came back to the apartments again. This time, he had a mission. The man was determined to get Jaks back for good. He saw Havoc as a threat to them both. He had ruined the head nurse for him. The woman that refused to commit was now getting married this year. Getting married to a soldier, no less! Both concepts when just tickets to Hell. Billy had to rescue Jacilyn from such a fate.

He started his plan by stalking the couple. Billy decided to learn about the enemy first before attacking. This morning, the couple were talking with people at the courthouse about how they would get a marriage license. Billy peeked through the window at them. Jean and Jaks sat with the judge talking.

“So what you’re saying that you’ll perform the ceremony, we sign the paperwork, and we’re married. Is that it?” she asked.

“Yes, pretty much,” the judge said. “Is that a problem?” The nurse looked at him sharply.

“How much does it cost?” she asked.

“Huh?” the judge asked. Jaks shrugged at him.

“How much will we have to pay for it?” the nurse asked slower. The judge relaxed.

“Oh yes, yes!” he said. “2,000 cenz.” The couple thought about that for moment. The judged waited nervously. Jaks finally smiled.

“I love that!” she said. She turned to her fiancee.

“What say you, Jean?” the nurse asked. The lt. thought about that for a moment.

“Well if that’s what you want…” he said. Jaks looked at him smiling.

“Oh come on Jean!” she said. “I want you to be happy too!” His girl cuddled up close to him. Havoc gave her a little smile. He gently held her hand.

“I will be happy with you on this,” the lt. told her. Jaks smiled and laid her head to his shoulder.

“I love you,” she murmured. Jean lightly patted her on the head.

“I love you too, Jaks,” he whispered. The judge smiled as he placed his hands on the desk.

“It’s settled then!” he said. “You will be getting married here at this court.” Outside, Billy looked on in disgust. “Just look at him!” he thought pissed off. “She slobbering all over him! My Jaks was never like that! I’ll kill him, I swear I will!” Suddenly the judge looked over the couple and saw the stalker.

“Guys,” he said. “Who is that outside?” The couple looked up with reality in their minds.

“Huh?” they asked. The judge pointed out the big glass window. Jaks and Jean looked at the direction given to them. They saw Billy and he panicked. Jaks sighed and rolled my eyes.

“That’s my ex-boyfriend,” she complained. Havoc looked at her puzzled.

“He *still* wants you back?” he asked. His fiancee shrugged.

“What can I say?” she asked. “I’m just that hard to forget.”

“Jaks!” the lt. complained. His woman sighed a bit.

“Fine,” she said. “I’ll talk to him.” Jean felt much better now. Thus, the war began. For the rest of the day, Billy stalked Jean and Jaks. He practically followed them everywhere that they went. Such a pain really. The couple tried to ignore him at first. But, the man just wouldn’t give up. This was really starting to bug Jean ever so much.

“I watch that he was a crook, then I can just shoot him,” he mumbled to his fiancee.

“Shhh!” Jaks whispered. “He’ll hear you.”

“Oh, right!” the lt. whispered back to her. “So how do we get rid of him?” Jaks smiled at him richly.

“Now or for good?” she questioned.

“I would like both, thank you,” Havoc told her. His finacee gave him a little kiss on the his cheek.

“Well then,” she said in a whisper. “I’ll see what I can do. But right now…” The head nurse glanced over her shoulder for a little bit. Billy was just a few feet behind them. She turned back to her man.

“Operation escape!” Jaks whispered. Jean nodded.

“Right,” he whispered back.

“On the count of three,” she said.

“Right!” Havoc whispered back.

“One,” Jaks whispered.

“Two,” Jean said softly.

“Three!” the couple said together, quickly. Then, the couple rushed away as fast as they could. Naturally, Billy tried to keep up. However in thirty minutes, he lost the couple. He cursed himself softly. But yet, the poor little fool wouldn’t give up. Thus, beginning the origin of fire known as envy.
