Simone’s Notes:

Death is the termination of the biological functions that sustain a living organism. The word refers both to the particular processes of life's cessation as well as to the condition or state of a formerly living body. Phenomena which commonly bring about death include predation, malnutrition, disease, and accidents or intentional trauma resulting in terminal injury. The nature of death has been for millennia a central concern of the world's religious traditions and of philosophical enquiry, and belief in some kind of afterlife or rebirth has been a central aspect of religious faith. In modern scientific enquiry, the origin and nature of consciousness has yet to be fully understood; any such view about the existence or non-existence of consciousness after death therefore remains speculative.

William made it back to his wife in the early morning hours. He had just shut the door when he felt someone watching him in the dark living room. The man paused and turned around.

“Who’s there?” he asked.

“It’s only me,” a soft voice murmured in the dark. William looked and saw Karen sitting on the couch in her night robe. Her husband relaxed some.

“Oh,” he said. But then, the man paused. “Honey, what are you doing up so early?”

“I could ask you the same thing,” she said. Bill made a face at her.

“Oh what do you…” he began to ask. Then, it happened again. The man froze and gasped in pain. Karen’s face changed into alarm.

“Baby?” she asked. “What’s the matter?” William shook his head.

“It’s nothing,” he brushed off. “I just need to sleep it off.” His head began to feel prickly and light as his breathing grew heavier. Heat built up all over his body. He staggered backwards to the door.

“What’s wrong with me?” he slurred out. He felt as if his heart would jump out his chest. He tried to grab onto the nearest thing that he could.

“William! Are you alright?” his wife cried. Her voice sounded so distant in his ears. The world sank around him as he fell backwards onto the fresh carpet.

“William!”

He awoke in his own bed moments later. The man opened his eyes and looked around. The light had been dimmed. Karen sat at the foot of his bed.

“I did it again, didn’t I?” her husband asked. Karen didn’t look at him.

“I think it’s getting worse,” she whispered. Her husband looked puzzled.

“What do you mean?” he asked.

“You need to see a doctor,” she said.

“It’s not that bad.”

“Please William!” Karen cried. She leapt next to him on the bed. “For my sake! Please!” Her husband blinked at her.

“That bad, huh?” he asked.

“Yes!” Karen cried. William smiled and gave her a little pat on the head.

“Okay, okay,” he said. “I’ll go to the doctor in the morning.” His wife laid her head on his chest. Shock hit her eyes.

“You’re burning up!” she cried. She could even hear him breathing so heavily.

The next morning brought grim news to the couple. Dr. Mathis came back with the charts. Karen and William waited with silent faces.

“What’s wrong, Doc?” Bill asked. The cranky doctor shook her head.

“It doesn’t look too good,” she said. She looked over at Karen.

“Do you want to step out for a moment?” she asked.

“No,” Karen said as she squeezed William’s hand. “I’m staying right here!”

“Very well,” Dr. Mathis said. “William here is dying.” The couple looked on in silence.

“How?” William asked.

“I’ve never seen anything like it,” she answered. “But, we’ll have to run more tests on the tumor inside your chest to get a better picture.” As she spoke this, William and Karen secretly held tight hands.

Panting. Searching for a way out of the darkness. The lamb couldn’t escape. They have him trapped here again. No, not again. They always have him trapped in this hell. These only of weeks had been quiet lately. Maybe they found someone else to torment for a change? No, that would be next to too good to believe. They had been saving up and now they were cashing in. That wasn’t the only thing the lamb noticed however.

Alex lied awake in his bed, trembling. Blood. He always smelled blood in his dreams. However, he couldn’t be sure whose it was. Is it mine?, he thought. Am I finally going to die? Are they going to kill me?

Not quite. At least not yet anyway.

Alex shook his head and reached over to his nightstand. He picked up his cell phone and the only number he felt like calling at this time of night.

“Hello Toby?” he whispered. “They are starting again. I think something bad is going to happen to us all.”
