Simone’s Notes:

Bastet is the name commonly used by scholars today to refer to a feline goddess of Ancient Egyptian religion who was worshipped at least since the Second Dynasty. Her name is also spelled Bast, Baast, Ubasti and Baset. Bastet, the form of the name which is most commonly adopted by Egyptologists today, is only a modern convention, which offers one possible reconstruction. In early Egyptian, her name appears to have been bstt, where ȝ represents an aleph. In Egyptian writing, the second t marks a feminine ending, but was not usually pronounced, and the aleph may have moved to a position before the accented syllable, as witnessed by the Aramaic spelling bst. By the first millennium, then, bstt would have been something like 'obest' or 'ubesti' in Egyptian speech.

Nately and Kathleen lied in her bed after a long lovemaking session. The sound of outside and their soft breaths keeping up made the night feel so gentle. Nately turned to his girlfriend.

“I love you,” he whispered.

She smiled at him. “I love you too.”

He leaned in and kissed on the tip of her nose. She giggled at the gesture. Nately’s lips curved into a smile. An old idea floated back into his head.

“I want to marry you.”

Kathleen looked confused. “What?”

“Not right now. But sometime in the future. What do you think?”

Kathleen began to frown. Nately looked worried.

“What’s wrong?”

“I just got my father to break off the previous engagement.”

“So?”

“It’s going to be difficult for him to accept that I’m worrying a soldier in the army.”

“Hasn’t he come to accept me yet?”

Kathleen gave him a sheepish little shrug. Her boyfriend’s face dropped.

“No?”

“Sort of…”

“What do you mean?”

“Well… it’s kind of complicated.”

Nately rolled over on his stomach. “Complicated how?”

She swallowed hard. “He is accustomed to you now, but…”

“But what?”

“He still isn’t too happy about the idea of me dating a soldier.”

“Really? He hasn’t sent me any death glares lately.”

“This is true.”

Nately then frowned. “He’s never going to like me, is he?”

“Don’t say that! He will… eventually…”

Both went silent and grim there. Nately gently both his arm around her.

“So if we ever get your father’s approval, will you marry?”

“In the near future?”

“Yes.”

Kathleen pretended to think about that for a moment. Her boyfriend waited for her answer. The heiress finally looked over at him with a little smile on her baby-face.

“Yes!”

Nately gave it his all not to squeal out loud to his future finacee. “Ooo! This will be so good!” He looked deep into her sweet blue eyes.

“This calls for celebration.” He leaned over and kissed her on the lips. Kathleen gently stopped him.

“Already?”

Her boyfriend gave her one of his famous boyish pouts. “Aw, no party?”

She smiled as she shook her head. “Not yet. We’re not official engaged yet.”

“Oh…”

Kathleen gently patted him on the head. “There, there. You’ll get your celebration once we get through all of this.”

“Promise?”

Kathleen gently kissed him on the tip of his nose. “Promise.”

Nately settled his chin on her soft, bare shoulder. The playful lavender scent of her hair reminded him that she was permanently going to be his. Just a little while longer…
