It is believed by some in the field of medicine that the stories relating to encounters with succubi bear similar resemblance to the contemporary phenomenon of people reporting alien abductions, which has been ascribed to the condition known as sleep paralysis. It is therefore suggested that historical accounts of people experiencing encounters with succubi may have been in fact symptoms of sleep paralysis, with the hallucination of the said creatures coming from their contemporary culture. In Arabic superstition, the qarinah is a spirit similar to the succubus, with origins possibly in ancient Egyptian religion or in the animistic beliefs of pre-Islamic Arabia. A qarinah "sleeps with the person and has relations during sleep as is known by the dreams." They are said to be invisible, but a person with "second sight" can see them, often in the form of a cat, dog, or other household pet. "In Omdurman it is a spirit which possesses. ... Only certain people are possessed and such people cannot marry or the qarina will harm them."
“We need you to come back with us,” Syd said. Janine didn’t look impressed. Only one question came out of her mouth.
“Why?” she asked.
Syd blinked at her. “Why?”
“Why should I come back with you?” Janine challenged.
He paused for a long moment. The deity glanced over at his girl. She only shook her head and smiled at him. “Sorry, you’re on your own,” her eyes told him. Syd rolled his eyes at her. Bitch! He turned back to Janine.
“We need you back.”
Janine didn’t look impressed. “Why? To lock me back in confinement? No thanks, I will pass.”
He glared at her. “Bitch.”
“It’s own damn fault.”
“You locked me away all of those years!”
“It was for your own benefit.”
“Keeping me all alone in the dark behind glass. Also for my benefit?”
“You could say that.”
“Well, I don’t and I’m not going back with you!”
“But we really do need you!”
Janine gave it her all to repress a laughter. Syd sneered at her.
“What the hell is so damn funny?!?”
“You don’t look as intimidating as I have heard behind the glass. In fact, you look like a little punk-pussy!”
Ella stepped to defuse the situation.
“Okay,” she said. “Clearly this isn’t working. So, I going to take over this conversation now.” She turned to the diva half-breed.
“Listen. Give us twenty-four hours and we’ll get back to you with a better offer to get you back. Sound good?”
Janine still didn’t look impressed as she shrugged with indifference. “Whatever. My answers still going to be the same, no matter what you say.”
There came a pause. Janine took another sip of wine.
“Are we done here?”
Ella nodded. “Yeah.”
“Good, now get out.”
Syd opened his mouth to speak, but his dojin grabbed him by the arm and led him out of the room. Janine sat back and finished her wine.
That’s all for today.
