Artemis/Diana:

Simone’s Notes:

A number of cultures have adopted the traditional Western custom of the white wedding, in which a bride wears a white wedding dress and veil. This tradition was popularized through the wedding of Queen Victoria. Some say Victoria's choice of a white gown may have simply been a sign of extravagance, but may have also been influenced by the values she held which emphasized sexual purity. Within the modern 'white wedding' tradition, a white dress and veil are unusual choices for a woman's second or subsequent wedding.

“Let’s just get this over with,” Jaks said outside of the courthouse.

“Agreed,” Havoc said back. He took her by the arm and led inside. There would only be a small group for this wedding today. The couple didn’t tell their parents until three days before the wedding.

“My mom wasn’t happy,” Havoc said.

“Neither was mine,” Jacklyn said. “But I don’t want this wedding blown into a big lavish party. That’s just not me.”

“But I want my parents there for my wedding,” he said.

“They will be,” Jaks said. “I just didn’t want your mom and my mom to micromanage everything.” The nurse kissed him on the tip of his nose.

Today, his parents and comrades, the clerk, and her mother and housemates waited in the warm courthouse.

“We’re here,” Havoc said.

“Please take your seats,” the clerk said. The guests took their seats as the couple walked up to the front desk.

“You sure you don’t want anything fancy?” Havoc asked her a week earlier.

“We’ve been over this already,” she said.

“Okay, okay. I just want to make it a special day.”

The nurse crawled into his lap. “It doesn’t have to be lavish for it to be special.”

Jean gave her a boyish smile. “Can we at least get a cake?”

She sighed. “Fine, you can have your damn cake.” He chuckled and pushed her down on the couch.

“Yeah, yeah,” Jaks said.

The couple said their vows. It felt surreal to Jaks. She never saw herself as the marrying-type. Here she was in the courthouse. At least, it wasn’t in a church with a puffy white wedding dress. Her vowed to have her walk down the aisle before she died. Jaks only smiled. You happy now, ma? I am finally getting married to a good man. Can you get off of my back now?

Breda handed Havoc the rings. The groom himself was happy to get what he wanted. It took him years to get a girlfriend. He didn’t even think he would get to walk down the aisle. His parents never gave up hope, however. They would ask when they would get to meet the future Mrs. Havoc. He smiled as he held his bride’s hand. I did it, mom, dad. I am finally getting married. I am a happy man!

Once the license was signed, Jean and Jaks were married.

“See? That wasn’t so bad, was it?” he whispered at the reception.

“Yeah, yeah,” his wife whispered back at the table.

Havoc gave her another kiss on the lips. “I love you.”

“Yeah, I love you.”
